“TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE”

"TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE"

"And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted Him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

Was the goal of this lawyer to really inherit eternal life? He asked a great question with a facetious undertone. Still Jesus gave him the right answer. In the Bible days, especially in the New Testament people were admonished to live their lives with eternity in view, many took it seriously and others lightly. Though the above passage revealed that the lawyer asked the question to tempt Jesus, let us ask ourselves this question genuinely.

Eternity is not for casual Christianity, it is for Christians that have a deep relationship and are diligent in seeking Jesus. The question he asked was “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” The lawyer wanted an answer from Jesus and he got the right answer.

The answer given by Jesus is “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy soul…and thy neighbor as thyself”. Loving the Lord by loving people; serving the Lord by serving people; and loving thy neighbor. When last did you give a smile of love to a neighbor? There is no excuse for us as Christians; a neighbor is any one we can help and is not limited to the person living physically next to you. Be reminded that no act of help goes unrecognized. Help and love others unconditionally, no matter how difficult it may be – God’s grace is available and sufficient. It takes the grace of God to love people for so many reasons. As easy as it is to hate people, it is certain that hatred  or any resulting action for the people created in the image of God will not lead any one to eternal life. Just love the people for the sake of your eternity. Love brings peace. Ask for God’s grace to show love in every situation that might arise, despite the challenge.
